A Common Infection is usually viral. Examples include sore throats, coughing, runny nose and fever. If you are not sure please see a doctor especially if they have a nasty throat infection as these infections require antibiotics.

Often with COMMON INFECTIONS the following vitamins and minerals are deficient but you should always conduct a blood test to measure the levels of vitamins or minerals that your child may be deficient in - to avoid excessive intake.

  • Pro Biotics

    Probiotics provide both anti-inflammatory and immune boosting effects. Take a mixed one. For example: Polybac from Nutritioncare.

  • Vitamin D

    Vitamin D is available by itself. Examples of good supplement providers for Children include: Metagentics, Bioceuticals, Blackmores, or Nutrition Care (For Children).

  • Magnesium

    Magnesium is an antihistamine and has a calming effect on the whole body. Magnesium is deficient in Australian soil. It can be obtained through use of a Multi Vitamin. Examples of good supplement providers include: ‘Fibroplex for Children’ (made by Metagenics) or “Kids Plus” by Nutrition Care. Chronic Magnesium deficiency may provoke atopic allergic reactions. (Durlach). Magnesium-rich foods, such as almonds, cashews, wheat bran, and kelp, are excellent foods for eczema relief, because magnesium is an antihistamine. Magnesium also has a calming effect on the whole body.

  • Vitamin E

    A deficiency of Vitamin E is associated with increased infections. You can pierce the tablets and squeeze the Vitamin E into yoghurt.

  • Folate

    If a deficient in folate a supplemental dose should be administered based on doctor’s guidelines, as folate deficiency is commonly associated with Infection.

  • Selenium

    Kills viruses. It is important to get correct dosage from a medical practitioner such as NIIM or ACNEM as overdosing on Selenium can be toxic.

  • Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's)

    Supplementation with essential fatty acids may reduce Infection symptoms in certain individuals who have essential fatty acid deficiency. An example of good sources of omega-3s could include Sardines and Salmon, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and has anti-inflammatory effects that help allergy relief. Other foods rich in inflammation-fighting omega-3s include walnuts (oil) and flaxseeds (oil). Try a child supplement of Omega-3’s for Kids by Metagenics – they have a peppermint flavoured one! They recommend Children 1-4 years: Take 2.5ml, Children 5-12 years take 5ml.

  • Zinc

    Studies show if a patient is deficient in Zinc then by taking increased ZINC, Infections can diminish. A zinc deficiency is associated with impaired immune function and increased susceptibility to infection. Liquid Zinc for children (is tasteless), which your Naturopath will have. 

  • Arginine

    Improves immune function and reduces risk of infection.

  • Glutamine

    Essential during infection. 

  • Iron

    Infections have been associated with iron deficiency and some evidence suggests that iron supplements may reduce the severity of symptoms. Please have your practitioner measure your child's iron levels.   Iron supplementation is inappropriate unless iron levels are found.  Iron supplementation should be monitored with regular testing.

  • Vitamin C

    A deficiency in Vitamin C is often found in Children with Infection. Supplementation may also improve recovery rates. Foods containing vitamin C, such as oranges, strawberries, apples, and watermelon, counteract the inflammatory allergic response. In general a Child needs Ages 1 to 3 years: 15 milligrams (mg) daily,  Ages 4 to 8: 25 mg daily. Children ages 1 to 3 should not get more than 400 mg of vitamin C a day. Children ages 4 to 8 should not get more than 650 mg a day. Be careful before giving a child chewable supplements meant for adults because each tablet can contain up to 500 mg.

Tips

  • Rule out food sensitivity
  • Several reports have noted improvements in allergies and asthma following elimination of food and/or food additives.
  • Do an IgG 93 Food Sensitivity Profile. You need to see a doctor who is from NIIM or a member of ACNEM. https://www.acnem.org
  • Skin tests and blood allergen specific IgE (RAST) tests are reliable and scientifically validated allergy tests. Together with a medical history and examination these tests can help your doctor define the cause of your allergies and are rebated by Medicare in Australia
